CARSPO 2026: Disu warns police against political bias ahead of 2027 elections

Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu cautioned politicians and their supporters against resorting to hiring thugs, purchasing votes, or threatening voters and electoral officials during the 2027 general elections. Addressing attendees at the sixth conference for senior police officers in Owerri, Imo State, Disu emphasized that the police would not tolerate any electoral offences and vowed to investigate and prosecute those involved, regardless of their political standing.

He urged politicians to "compete with ideas, not with thugs" and stressed that the police would collaborate with INEC, EFCC, and ICPC to investigate vote buying and intimidation. Disu further stated that arrests would not suffice; instead, those arrested would face trial in court. He warned that impunity would be the main driver of electoral crimes, urging the Nigerian people to vote peacefully and report any wrongdoing.

As part of police preparations for the 2027 elections, Disu unveiled a six-point framework encompassing enhanced intelligence and early-warning systems, improved training and readiness, improved coordination among security agencies, better communication and utilization of technology, strengthened community engagement, and strict impartiality.
