Don’t turn students away over trunks and chop boxes – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged school principals not to exclude newly admitted students or prevent them from boarding accommodations based on the type of metal trunks, wooden chop boxes, or other personal storage containers they bring to school. In a statement, GES emphasized that treating students fairly and accommodating them without discrimination based on their economic circumstances is crucial.

Deputy GES Director-General Professor Mrs Smile Dzisi signed the statement, which follows reports of some senior high schools and technical schools refusing admission or turning away students because of the type of storage containers they use. The GES advised regional directors to inform all school heads to stop turning away or refusing admission to students solely based on the type of storage container they bring to school, provided the items are reasonably sized, safe, and do not pose a risk to others.

Any reported case of a student being denied accommodation solely due to their storage container should be investigated and reported to management. Violating this directive could result in disciplinary action against the head of the school, as per the established standards, regulations, and laws of the GES.
