CNN, MS NOW, Politico sue over denied White House access, citing First Amendment

CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump's administration on Monday, accusing the government of blatantly violating the First Amendment by denying them access to the White House over the weekend. The outlets argued that the administration's decision to ban them from covering the White House represented a clear escalation of Trump's long-standing attempts to restrict news coverage he deems objectionable or "fake news."

These actions were also seen as the latest test of First Amendment protections in the United States, where the government is constitutionally prohibited from restricting the press without providing notice or process. The Constitution, according to the lawsuit filed by the three news organizations, does not allow a president or any other government official to deny the press their First Amendment rights and liberty and property interests based solely on their dislike of the content of their reporting. The joint lawsuit was filed two days after the outlets were denied access to the White House.
