China and Europe should not fight trade wars, says Chinese foreign minister

China and Europe should refrain from engaging in trade wars, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. In a call with his German counterpart, Wang emphasized that China and Europe are comprehensive strategic partners. He urged both sides to resolve their concerns through dialogue and consultation, rather than resorting to trade disputes.

Germany has been vocal within the EU about its concerns regarding China's trade practices, primarily due to industrial overcapacity and an undervalued currency. Wang assured German Foreign Minister Johannis Wadephul that strengthening mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation serves the interests of both nations and is the right course of action.

Wang highlighted that China consistently encourages both parties to engage in constructive dialogue and address each other's concerns. He urged Germany to adopt a rational and pragmatic approach, promoting free trade and rejecting protectionist measures. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that China hopes Germany maintains a constructive stance, fostering peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The ministers also discussed pressing global issues, including Iran, Ukraine, and the status of Taiwan. China expressed the hope that Germany would take concrete steps to sustain Chinese-German relations and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, paving the way for high-level exchanges. Taiwan has been increasingly engaging with European countries, with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim making two visits to the continent within the past year, a move that has irked China.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung made a rare visit to Germany in June, an announcement made public only after the fact.
