Broadcast industry calls for immediate restoration of BARC TV ratings

The Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation (IBDF) has urged for the immediate reinstatement of BARC television ratings, citing concerns over revenue visibility and expectations during the festive season. At the Foundation’s 27th Annual General Meeting, IBDF president Kevin Vaz emphasized television’s significant role in India’s social, cultural, and economic landscape.

Broadcasters highlighted that the suspension of BARC TV ratings has created uncertainty for advertisers, disrupted media planning, and prevented them from fully realizing the commercial potential of a crucial period. The Information & Broadcasting Ministry had directed BARC to halt publishing television ratings until its licence is renewed under the Television Ratings Policy, 2026.

IBDF also welcomed the government's decision to omit certain regulations and TRAI's repeal of specific rules, which they believe will benefit the broadcasting ecosystem. Television revenues in 2025 reached Rs 617 billion, accounting for about 22% of India’s Media and Entertainment sector. The IBDF AGM also reviewed the body’s engagement with stakeholders on various regulatory matters impacting the sector, including forbearance, telecom regulations, AI, copyright, taxation, and piracy.
