British Columbia sues OpenAI over Tumbler Ridge school shooting

On September 21, British Columbia filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in California, alleging that the company could have prevented a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge had it alerted local authorities about the shooter's use of ChatGPT to plan the massacre. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, which seeks damages for the province's recovery costs and urges changes to OpenAI's handling of potentially violent ChatGPT conversations.

Nine individuals, mostly children, were killed during the February 10 shooting. Jesse Van Rootselaar, the shooter, had previously used ChatGPT to discuss gun violence but escaped detection by ChatGPT's safety team. Despite being warned, OpenAI did not notify law enforcement, and CEO Altman later apologized, stating the company would implement reforms.

However, these promises were never followed through. The lawsuit also highlights similar legal actions against OpenAI in Florida, where the state recently filed a suit alleging OpenAI misrepresented its platform's safety, particularly in relation to school shootings and youth harm.
