Apple’s Tim Cook sees Australia’s social media curbs as ‘world-leading’, PM says

Apple Executive Chair Tim Cook considers Australia's stringent social media regulations to be "world-leading", according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. During a recent meeting at the company's headquarters in California, Cook provided Albanese with in-depth information about Apple's latest safety controls for children online.

Australia recently expanded its efforts to safeguard its citizens by allowing social media users to customize their feed content. In December, the nation introduced a ban on social media for users under the age of 16, a move that has since been emulated by other countries, including the European Commission's proposal to limit social media access for children under 13.

Cook recently relinquished his position as Apple's CEO after 15 years in the role. Albanese's visit to the US comes amid a debate among industry leaders regarding the pace of technological advancement, particularly around artificial intelligence (AI). The Australian Prime Minister emphasized the importance of establishing a global framework to ensure human oversight as AI rapidly evolves.

His stance on AI safety contrasts with that of former US President Donald Trump, who has dismissed concerns over AI and downplayed the necessity of additional regulations.
