Apple’s Tim Cook sees Australia’s social media curbs as ’world-leading’, PM says

Apple Executive Chair Tim Cook deemed Australia's new curbs on social media as "world-leading" during a recent meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Prime Minister conveyed Cook's positive assessment over the phone from Apple Park in California. The Australian government recently enacted a plan that allows social media users to choose the content they view on their feeds, marking a significant step in online safety.

In December, Australia became the first nation to ban social media for children under the age of 16. Other countries, including the European Commission, have proposed similar bans for children under 13. Cook, who recently relinquished his position as Apple CEO after 15 years, expressed gratitude to Albanese for sharing the company's innovative safety controls.

Albanese emphasized the need for global discussion and regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as it progresses rapidly, stressing the importance of human oversight. This stance differs from that of former President Donald Trump, who dismissed AI concerns and deemed additional regulation unnecessary.
