Annoh-Dompreh cautions against arrests over political criticism

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has cautioned against utilizing state institutions to target political opponents and citizens for their online comments. Addressing the 2026 Mampong Ohum/Odwira celebration, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh emphasized the importance of restraint in addressing political criticism and advocated for respect of democratic governance principles such as due process and fairness.

He highlighted that political power is temporary, urging authority figures to consider the long-term impact of actions taken against political adversaries and citizens who voice opinions online.

Mr. Annoh-Dompreh stressed the risk of the criminal justice system becoming involved in partisan political disputes, especially when similar actions are treated differently based on political allegiance. His remarks come as there is renewed public discourse over the arrest and prosecution of individuals accused of publishing offensive, defamatory, or threatening content on social media.

He called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other influential figures to promote responsible political dialogue and discourage insulting and inflammatory rhetoric, particularly on digital platforms.

Acknowledging the growing role of digital media in political discussions, especially among younger demographics, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh urged citizens to exercise responsibility in their public expressions while preserving their right to criticize leaders and hold public officials accountable. He reiterated that Ghana’s democratic institutions must uphold fairness, due process, and the equal application of the law, irrespective of political background.
