2027: Yobe gov, IPCR urge dialogue, inclusion to ensure peaceful polls

The government of Yobe State and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) have urged for sustained investment in peacebuilding, dialogue, justice and inclusion as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections. This call was made during the 2026 International Day of Peace Commemoration held in Abuja. The event, organized around the United Nations theme of 'Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,' brought together stakeholders from various sectors including government, the United Nations, Civil Society Organisations and others.

Yobe State Governor Mai Buni, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brig-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd.), highlighted the state's efforts in strengthening its peace architecture in response to security and conflict challenges. These efforts include early warning and response mechanisms, responsible use of technology, conflict management and peacebuilding capacity building, as well as peace education and cross-community dialogues.

The governor emphasized that these initiatives were carried out despite challenges posed by what he termed 'conflict entrepreneurs' seeking to exploit social divisions. He also stated that Yobe State is contributing to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu's administration, particularly in areas of durable peace, improved security, economic resilience, inclusive growth and democratic consolidation.

The IPCR Director-General, Dr Joseph Ochogwu, emphasized that peace is not a destination but a continuous investment. He urged stakeholders to view the International Day of Peace as a platform for practical action rather than a ceremonial observance. Ochogwu noted that democratic stability is built through daily practices of justice, fairness, inclusion, dialogue and respect for the rule of law.

He also highlighted that the IPCR has intensified election-related conflict prevention through various systems and engagements, and identified electoral violence prevention as part of their preparations for the 2027 elections. Dr Grace Kpoa, the UN representative, emphasized the need for stronger institutions and mechanisms for resolving differences through dialogue, and stressed that conflict prevention is most effective when grievances, tensions and risks are identified and addressed before they escalate into crises.
