Weak Ukraine Air Defense Threatens Poland, Defense Chief Warns

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz warned during a speech before lawmakers that failing to provide Ukraine with adequate air defense systems and interceptor ammunition directly heightens the military threat to Poland. Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Polish fighter jets were dispatched overnight to safeguard national airspace amid Russian missile and drone strikes targeting western Ukraine.

He emphasized that recurring incidents along NATO's eastern border can no longer be dismissed as accidental, deeming them as deliberate aggression against NATO member states. Kosiniak-Kamysz criticized opposition lawmakers questioning defense aid to Ukraine, arguing that such rhetoric aligns with Moscow's strategic goals rather than Poland's national security interests.

He highlighted that if Ukraine lacks air defense assets and ammunition to intercept incoming drones, many will fly through Ukraine and reach Poland. The debate in Warsaw comes amid a series of security alerts along Poland's eastern border, including a Russian missile strike within two kilometers of the Polish border in the Volyn region on September 13.

Polish air defenses and allied aircraft have frequently been on heightened alert to monitor Russian strike waves, with military planners warning that the deployment of high-speed jet-powered drones increases the risk near international boundaries. Poland recently joined a European defense coalition aimed at countering ballistic missile threats alongside Ukraine and nine other European nations, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Volodymyr Zelensky confirming the country's participation during a joint press conference in Ukraine.
