Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s first chief executive, honoured with state funeral

Hong Kong is mourning the passing of its first post-colonial chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, who passed away at the age of 89 on September 8. Tung led Hong Kong through numerous challenges, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 2003 Sars outbreak, and the subsequent economic recovery. His tenure was marked by both triumphs and tribulations, solidifying his place in the city's history.

Following his death, Hong Kong paid tribute to Tung with a state funeral on Sunday. This honor is unprecedented, as it marks only the third instance in Hong Kong's history where a Hongkonger has received such a ceremony since the 1997 transfer of power. The funeral was organized by an 87-member committee led by Shi Taifeng, a prominent figure within the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the Communist Party's Politburo.

In the days leading up to the funeral, a vigil was held at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point, where dozens of political and business leaders gathered to pay their respects to the late leader. Members of the public have also been given the opportunity to commemorate Tung by signing condolence books at three community halls until noon on Sunday.

Tung's legacy in Hong Kong has been widely praised, with many highlighting his ability to navigate the city through turbulent times. His former colleagues and contemporaries have shared their memories and tributes, emphasizing his dedication to the well-being of Hong Kong and his role as a unifying figure during various crises.
