Trump cancels weekend trip as Houthi crisis deepens

U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended a weekend at Camp David and returned to the White House as tensions intensified over a conflict involving the Houthi rebels in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Early Saturday, Saudi forces intercepted a ballistic missile targeting Riyadh and reported unsuccessful strikes on other cities. The Houthi group claimed to have launched missile and drone attacks on "sensitive" targets in Riyadh and an Aramco facility in Yanbu, with smoke observed near King Khalid International Airport.

The U.S. State Department cautioned that the situation could rapidly worsen, instructing American personnel in the region to prepare for potential disruptions. White House officials stated that the Camp David gathering aimed to discuss potential strikes, though this claim has not been confirmed. This abrupt change in Trump's schedule has sparked speculation about the possibility of direct U.S. intervention in Yemen.

Yemeni analysts noted that Trump's return was a notable shift in messaging, as he had previously shown reluctance to support Saudi Arabia. While Washington maintains a de facto dialogue with the Houthis, negotiations reportedly failed to secure their commitment to avoid targeting American, Israeli, or other commercial vessels. The ceasefire brokered last May, which concluded a U.S. bombing campaign, did not address the underlying Yemeni conflict.

Trump has suggested the Houthis requested a reduced U.S. presence, while Vice President Kamala Harris affirmed ongoing direct communication with the Iran-backed rebels. In recent days, the Houthis have taken control of the Red Sea port of Mokha, advanced along Yemen's western coastline, and seized islands near the Bab Al Mandeb strait.

In response, Saudi Arabia has conducted airstrikes and requested additional military and intelligence assistance from the U.S. The Trump administration has offered intelligence support and supplies instead of direct military involvement. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has urged Trump for a decisive U.S. response, but Washington has thus far declined, providing only intelligence and support.

During a recent interview, Trump indicated he was weighing a significant decision regarding Iran, stating, "I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?" Any action against the Houthis could potentially trigger a broader conflict, with unintended consequences extending beyond Yemen. At present, military options appear to be under serious consideration, though a definitive decision has not been made.
