'Traumatic, tragic': child dead, two critical in attack

A tragic scene unfolded in Valley Heights, a small Blue Mountains township in New South Wales, on Sunday when a young child was killed and two others critically injured in a stabbing attack. Three children and a woman were discovered with stab wounds inside a vehicle at around 12.45pm. The father of the three children, who learned of the attack while at work, received the devastating news.

Police Superintendent John Nelson informed the public that the woman was in her 40s, while the children were all under five years old. No prior police interaction with the woman was reported, and investigators have not identified any additional suspects. The woman and the two surviving children are currently undergoing surgery at Westmead Hospital and Westmead Children's Hospital, respectively.

Superintendent Nelson commended the public, remarking that witnessing such a tragic event is both traumatic and heart-wrenching. The officers responded professionally, and the weapon used and circumstances of the incident would be determined by investigators. A crime scene has been established, and local police and the homicide squad are conducting their investigation.

Blue Mountains councillor Darren Rodrigo expressed his deep sorrow, praising the community members who provided critical medical assistance and lauded the first responders' courage during this difficult time.
