Speeding driver blamed for scaring wild elephants in Khao Yai

Yesterday, September 19, a speeding driver was criticized online for scaring a pair of wild elephants in Khao Yai National Park. The incident occurred when the car reportedly passed by a father and calf crossing a road in the park. The elephants, named Pho Ngathong and Tonkla, were startled by the sudden presence of the vehicle, causing the calf to run to the roadside and nearly collide with its father.

The driver's behavior prompted a strong reaction from online users who questioned why someone would show such disregard for the well-being of the wild elephants. Kanchana Silpa-archa, leader of the Chart Thai Pattana Party, addressed the matter on her Facebook page. She expressed concern over the driver's actions, stating that the incident frightened Tonkla and nearly resulted in an accident.

Kanchana, who described the driver as a retired park official, urged Chief Chaiya of Khao Yai National Park to take decisive action against the man. She pointed out that the driver had a history of poor behavior and had been warned multiple times before. Kanchana warned that the park chief could face public backlash if the situation was not handled firmly.

Earlier in the day, Kanchana had also questioned the whereabouts of the driver. The incident is not the first of its kind in Khao Yai National Park, as wild elephants have previously been involved in other incidents, such as raiding a barbecue restaurant at night and getting trapped in a septic pit.
