Shettima To Lead Nigeria’s Delegation To 81st UNGA Kicking Off Tuesday In New York

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has been tasked by President Bola Tinubu to lead Nigeria's delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, set to commence in New York on Tuesday. The delegation, announced via a Sunday release by Shettima's Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, will include Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, as well as ministers and other top government officials.

The UNGA General Debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme 'Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.' During this event, Shettima will deliver Nigeria's national statement, articulating the country's stance and priorities on key global issues affecting national development, peace and security, economic growth, and international cooperation.

In addition to the General Debate, Shettima will engage in high-level meetings throughout the week, focusing on matters such as the Right to Development, climate action, and other strategic issues of importance to Nigeria and the African continent. He is also expected to attend the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and participate in bilateral discussions with leaders from other countries, international organizations, and development partners, furthering President Tinubu's economic diplomacy objectives and nurturing strategic partnerships.

Following his commitments in New York, Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of his engagements during the UNGA week.
