Retro Japan in Photos: 'Tourism hall' in Shizuoka Pref. overlooks Sagami-nada Sea

The Ito-shi Kanko Kaikan, a tourism hall located in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, continues to be a beloved community hub despite its name not directly indicating tourism services. This reinforced-concrete structure, completed in 1966, stands out with its distinctive exterior and impressive architecture. The building comprises a conference wing and a hall wing, offering a spacious and bright interior with windows extending to the ceiling in the hall wing, providing a welcoming atmosphere even on overcast days.

Upon entering the atrium foyer, visitors are greeted by a striking tile mural, while a column-free staircase creates an impression of vastness. The white exterior of the building is reminiscent of a great ark, while the long, horizontal profile of the conference wing is accentuated by six massive columns and an attached emergency staircase. Straight window frames further enhance the building's aesthetic appeal.

From an open window within the hall, one can observe local anglers at work and, in the distance, Hatsushima Island, which belongs to the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture. The sounds of seagulls add to the tranquil ambiance surrounding the tourism hall. Despite its name, the Ito-shi Kanko Kaikan is not a tourist information center but serves as an important venue for concerts, lectures, meetings, and other events, cherished by local residents for its unique character and community spirit.
