Reds place RHP Chase Burns on 15-day IL with groin strain, ending the NL All-Star’s season

The Cincinnati Reds placed right-handed pitcher Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right groin strain, effectively ending the All-Star's season. Reds manager Terry Francona described Burns feeling the strain after his start on Friday, prompting the decision to be cautious. Burns, 23, had pitched 154 1/3 innings this season, more than doubling his 43 1/3 innings from his rookie year in 2025.

He finished with a 15-3 record, 2.86 ERA, 185 strikeouts, and a 1.166 WHIP in 29 starts, ranking third in Reds franchise history since 1900 in strikeouts during his first 36 career starts.

Burns served as the NL All-Star but was unable to pitch due to the groin issue. He expressed frustration with the injury, stating it was not the way he wanted his season to conclude. Burns had limited his appearances to three innings in each of his last three starts to avoid further strain. The Reds bolstered their pitching staff on Sunday by calling up Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville and designating outfielder TJ Friedl for assignment.

Friedl had struggled with a .172 batting average, four home runs, and 13 RBIs in 91 games, having been optioned to Louisville for the second time.
