Punjab govt on the fence as businesses oppose early closure under austerity measures

Punjab's government remains uncertain about enacting austerity measures mandated by the federal government, as businesses express concerns over the early closure of markets. Three discussions with traders have been held, but they have remained opposed to the proposed timings, questioning the benefits of such a decision amid their own economic difficulties.

The officials have been unable to persuade the recession-hit traders to comply with the restrictions. Federal authorities implemented the measures on September 17 to address fuel shortages caused by the Middle East conflict, which has resulted in rising oil prices globally. The Punjab government had previously introduced cost-cutting measures in March, before revising some in May to exempt gyms and other businesses.

This time, however, the government has not yet decided on the matter, as further discussions with businesses are planned to make a final decision.
