Princess Sirivannavari leads Chud Thai showcase in Tokyo

Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya has showcased all eight styles of Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniom, a traditional Thai national costume, in Tokyo. The presentation took place on September 18 at the Hyokeikan building of the Tokyo National Museum, alongside displays of three men's Suea Phra Ratchathan shirts. Organized by Thailand's Department of Cultural Promotion, the event "Chud Thai: Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume" ran from September 17 to 18 as part of initiatives to promote Thai national dress globally.

The program highlighted traditional Thai craftsmanship, such as jewelry making, metallic-thread work, silk embroidery, gold and silver artistry, traditional gold decoration, and silk weaving featuring auspicious designs. These creations were not merely displayed as historical artifacts but were presented as living elements of cultural heritage that could continue to evolve through modern design.

Thailand's Cabinet had previously approved the nomination of "Chud Thai: Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume" to UNESCO for consideration as intangible cultural heritage in 2024, with the nomination expected to be reviewed at the 21st session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee in December 2026 in Xiamen, China.

The Tokyo showcase is part of Thailand's broader efforts to position this tradition as a living heritage that respects its cultural roots while continuing to evolve.
