Oluremi Tinubu urges Nigerians to reduce food waste

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to reduce food waste and adopt sustainable practices to safeguard the environment. The appeal was made as part of the 2026 World Cleanup Day, which took place on Sunday with the slogan "From Clean Plates to Clean Cities." Tinubu emphasized the significance of addressing food waste in light of climate change, conflicts, and other global issues that are disrupting food production and supply chains.

"This year's focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply," she stated.

Tinubu urged individuals, households, businesses, and communities to be more mindful of their food-related habits, from purchasing to preparation, consumption, and preservation. She encouraged responsible practices such as minimizing waste, proper disposal of refuse, and embracing environmentally-friendly methods. "I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment," she added.

The First Lady stressed the importance of collective action in creating cleaner and healthier communities for both current and future generations. "Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations," she affirmed.
