North Korea fires unidentified projectile into East Sea

North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the East Sea on Sunday, according to South Korea's military. This came eight days after Pyongyang had fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the same body of water as part of what it described as a joint firepower drill. The launch occurred after North Korea rejected a UN nuclear watchdog resolution demanding it halt its nuclear activities.

Japan's prime minister's office confirmed the launch, stating it was a suspected ballistic missile, though the Japanese defence ministry later reported that the projectile had already fallen. North Korea accused hostile forces of attempting to undermine its nuclear program during the IAEA's General Conference. The country reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state, with its leaders declaring the arsenal permanent and irreversible.
