DUSU results: The story beyond ABVP's domination

The recent DUSU elections revealed a more intricate narrative than the initial three-to-one seat advantage for the ABVP. In the central panel voting, Deepanshu Shokeen emerged victorious with a substantial margin, toppling the initial expectations. The presidential and joint secretary contests, however, remained closely fought, pending the final count.

AISA-SFI, despite participating in the CJP mobilisation, saw a dip in its vote tally across four races, as per an analysis by The Indian Express' Sugandha Jha. Shokeen, a 21-year-old postgraduate in Buddhist studies, contested as an independent, breaking ties with the Congress-affiliated NSUI following a ticket distribution dispute.

His campaign resonated with Jat students and voters beyond this community, bolstered by his barefoot campaign for student justice post the Satya Niketan building collapse. Shokeen's victory in the vice president race, with 13,705 more votes than his nearest competitor, marked the beginning of a shift in DUSU's power dynamics. The presidential race, initially a tight contest, eventually saw Yash Dabas of ABVP clinching the post by a margin of 2,053 votes.

The joint secretary contest also saw a shift towards Lakshay Raj Singh, ABVP's candidate, by a narrow margin of 837 votes. While ABVP retained three out of the four central panel posts, the diverse contest highlighted the distribution of votes beyond the traditional two-party narrative.
