Najib’s legal team says frozen assets affect RM50m pardon condition

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's legal team stated that a portion of his frozen assets and properties are not under his sole control, affecting the conditions of his pardon. Messrs Shafee & Co, his lawyers, are reviewing the pardon terms and their implications. Despite this, Najib expressed gratitude to those who contributed towards meeting the RM50 million fine condition, emphasizing that he did not wish for UMNO members, supporters, or the public to feel obligated to assist him.

Under the conditional pardon issued by the Sultan of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, Najib can serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, provided he pays the RM50 million fine and adheres to other conditions. Should he fail to comply, the pardon will be revoked, and he must resume serving his sentence in prison.

Najib has been incarcerated at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, after being convicted in the SRC International case. His initial 12-year prison term was reduced to six years following a previous pardon in 2024, with his release date originally set for August 23, 2028.
