Mohammed bin Rashid: Every great idea begins with a great teacher

Dubai: Artificial intelligence will transform education, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum assured educators in a letter published as part of his book Lessons From Life. The UAE Vice President and Prime Minister described teachers as “makers of generations” and “architects of minds”, emphasizing their role extends beyond mere knowledge impartation.

"Every great idea begins with a great teacher," he affirmed, recalling a discussion where a young participant questioned the necessity of teachers in the age of AI. Sheikh Mohammed disagreed, asserting education shapes character, values, and human judgement. While machines enhance capabilities, they cannot replace the need for teachers who instill moral, social, and national frameworks, and develop crucial skills like communication and empathy.

The teacher's role will evolve from knowledge transmitters to guides who help students discern truth from falsehood and guide them in applying knowledge to the world. Sheikh Mohammed urged teachers to become lifelong learners, embracing technology instead of fearing it. He stressed that while technology won't replace teachers, skillful teachers will lead in the changing landscape.

Regardless of technological advancements, the teacher's primary responsibility remains to cultivate individuals who are loyal to their nation, engaged in society, capable of expressing their ideas, adept at using technology, and guided by a strong moral compass. He declared, "Countries build armies to protect their borders, but they build schools to protect the future. You are the makers of history and the builders of the future."
