Kumasi Central Market Phase II works set to resume in October

Kumasi Central Market Phase II developments are set to restart in October 2026, following recent talks between the local government and construction firms. Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi announced the resumption of work during a meeting with market traders and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The government and contractors have agreed on restarting construction, with plans to secure the necessary resources. Agyeman Boadi expressed confidence in the project's upcoming revival, attributing it to their interactions with the consultants and contractors.

The first phase of the redevelopment, completed in 2018, generated GH¢89 million for the municipality. However, Phase Two has been idle for years, causing inconvenience for traders and residents. The planned expansion of the Kejetia market would include 3,760 counter shops, over 6,000 lockable stalls, and a transportation terminal for 600 vehicles.

The €248 million contract, signed in December 2018, initially aimed for a 48-month completion time. The current status shows 68% overall completion, with 84% of procurement finished and 99% of engineering works completed. So far, €171 million has been spent on the project.

Boadi emphasized the government's commitment to finishing both Phase Two and the upcoming Phase Three, stating that the project holds significant importance to the President and the government. He warned traders against falling for individuals impersonating officials seeking premiums for stalls at the unfinished market. Reports suggesting the commencement of stall allocation were false, and traders should not pay anyone claiming to act on behalf of the Assembly.

The anticipated restart of construction is generating optimism among market traders and locals eager to see the facility completed, aiming to alleviate congestion and enhance conditions in Kumasi's primary commercial hub.
