Asiedu Nketiah urges better working conditions for journalists

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphasized the need for enhanced working conditions and greater institutional support for journalists. Nketiah made these remarks during the 4th Bono Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards in Sunyani. He stressed that journalists play a crucial watchdog role and should be provided with the necessary resources to conduct thorough investigations and sustain regional newsrooms.

Noting that regional journalism is vital as issues impacting communities outside Accra often get less attention in the national conversation, Nketiah urged journalists in the Bono Region to closely monitor public projects and spending. He highlighted the importance of maintaining accurate records of development projects, ensuring that citizens receive value for their money.

Nketiah also encouraged journalists to seek information from politicians and avoid treating critical questions as hostility if accurate reporting is required. He praised the award winners for their dedication to accurate and independent journalism, emphasizing that credibility is built over time through such practices. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, echoed Nketiah's sentiments, calling for journalists to uphold the themes of ethics, integrity, and impactful journalism, which he believed are essential for societal transformation.

Prof. Asare-Bediako stressed that journalists act as leaders through their words, truth, and influence, urging them to verify facts and resist sensationalism, prioritizing public interest and fairness.
