Kolhapur Trains 15 Trans Persons As Disaster Responders, Breaking Barriers Beyond Marginalisation

In Kolhapur, a group of transgender individuals, once marginalized and relegated to begging, are now taking up the role of first responders in disaster situations, bringing their unique strengths to the forefront. The Kolhapur District Disaster Management Authority in Maharashtra has trained 15 trans persons in crucial disaster response skills, marking the first of its kind in the country.

These volunteers have undergone rigorous training, covering flood management, search and rescue, first aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The idea of involving trans persons in disaster management evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic when they were supported by the administration with rations and financial assistance.

The training to become a responder sprang from Prasad Sankpal, the District Disaster Management Officer, who reached out to trans persons after noticing their resilience and care. Despite initial hesitation, the volunteers have now proven their worth, with one being a trained nurse and another associated with a Pune-based organization.

The initiative has not only transformed their lives but also encouraged public support and interest from other districts. For the volunteers, this training is about more than just technical skills; it's about being seen as reliable community members who can provide assistance during emergencies, breaking the cycle of exclusion and stigma.
