Japan triathlete Hojo wins first gold of Asian Games

NAGOYA, Japan - Triathlete Takumi Hojo of Japan secured the country's first gold medal at the Asian Games on Sunday, claiming victory in the men's individual triathlon. Hojo completed the grueling 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride, and 5,000-meter run in Gamagori city in an impressive 52 minutes and 56 seconds, narrowly edging out China's Zhang Xirui by nine seconds. Kazakhstan's Arlan Zhanabay rounded out the podium in third place, finishing six seconds behind Hojo.

The 30-year-old Hojo expressed his excitement about his win, stating that it will boost the Japanese team's morale and qualify him for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He admitted that the race was tough, but he pushed himself to give it his all. Hojo also won the Asian Games test triathlon a year ago on the same course, indicating his familiarity with the challenging terrain.

Silver medalist Zhang Xirui was closely matched with Hojo throughout most of the race during the final 5,000-meter run. However, Hojo managed to secure the gold. Zhang expressed his happiness despite being behind Hojo, noting that it was an honor for China. Young medalist Zhanabay was delighted to win a medal, acknowledging that winning is always the goal, but he was proud to have achieved a medal at his first Asian Games.
