More athletes than the Olympics, but plenty of problems as Asian Games open in Japan

The 20th Asian Games commenced in Japan on Saturday, marked by an impressive opening ceremony following logistical challenges. This multi-sport spectacle promises to surpass the scope of the Olympics, with 2028 Olympic venues up for grabs in seven sports. A total of 17,000 participants, more than the Olympic athletes, have put immense pressure on organizers, who have accommodated them in temporary container-style huts, hotels, and the cruise ship Costa Serena, in lieu of a traditional athletes' village.

Moreover, a record deluge recently flooded parts of Nagoya city, and a tropical storm looming could further disrupt the event. Some athletes faced transport issues, while teams complained about the accommodation quality, citing bed lengths that were too short. The opening ceremony is imminent, with India appointing Kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat as the new flag-bearer after Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s luggage was missing his ceremonial kit.

Despite the hurdles, organizers claim this edition will be "the most spectacular for generations", featuring sports from global favorites like basketball, football, and cricket to regional favorites such as sepak takraw and kabaddi. eSports, breakdancing, and BMX cycling will also attract younger viewers. Notable competitors include Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala, India's cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Chinese 13-year-old swimmer Yu Zidi.

Host nation Japan aims to capitalize on their Olympic successes, with gymnast Shinnosuke Oka and javelin thrower Haruka Kitaguchi set to compete. North Korea plans to send over 100 athletes across 14 sports in a bid to bring joy to their leader, while China, the likely medal winner, will send more than 800 athletes, including 36 Olympic champions.
