Indonesia to Co-Host 2027 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial With Netherlands

Indonesia and the Netherlands announced their collaboration to co-host the 2027 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial (UNPM) in Jakarta, according to a statement from Indonesia's Foreign Ministry on September 19, 2026. Umar Hadi, Indonesia's UN envoy, explained that this partnership aims to secure political backing, promote inclusive international collaboration, and guarantee effective, responsive, and well-resourced peacekeeping operations.

This will be Indonesia's inaugural hosting of the UNPM; Germany relinquished its hosting duties during a meeting of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations in New York on Thursday. The delegation comprised the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Indonesia's Ambassador Umar Hadi, the Dutch Ambassador Lise Grégoire van Haaren, and key UN officials such as Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Atul Khare, and Catherine Pollard.

The 2027 UNPM in Jakarta presents Indonesia with a chance to champion political commitments and collective resolutions to peacekeeping challenges while reinforcing cooperation among member states, troop-contributing nations, and the UN itself. Indonesia's involvement in peacekeeping dates back to 1957, when it contributed to the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai, Egypt. Since then, Indonesia has sent over 60,000 peacekeepers to various global conflict zones.

Tragically, four Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed in incidents in Lebanon in March and April 2026. Despite these losses, Indonesia remains steadfast in its dedication to UN peacekeeping. Amid evolving international dynamics, peacekeeping forces are crucial in preserving international peace and security. Indonesia emphasized that peacekeeping efforts must align with robust political solutions and post-conflict peacebuilding to foster enduring peace.
