INCOIS to deploy AI, satellite remote sensing to track marine litter hotspots
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad will utilize a blend of ocean modelling, satellite remote sensing, and AI/ML tools to identify and forecast marine litter hotspots, as part of a national effort to combat ocean pollution. INCOIS Director T.M. Balakrishnan Nair stated at the launch of the National Initiative for Remediation of Marine Litter that these scientific tools will help pinpoint areas where marine waste accumulates, facilitating targeted clean-up and mitigation efforts.
The pilot phase, established in Visakhapatnam with Andhra University and Vignana Bharati (VIBHA), has been inaugurated by MoES Secretary T. Srinivasa Kumar and Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat during the Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0 campaign. Kumar emphasized that extensive scientific studies will be conducted around Visakhapatnam to pinpoint sources of marine plastic litter, monitor its movement, and determine accumulation regions.
These studies will also aid in formulating strategies for plastic waste removal and recycling, thus promoting a circular economy.
