ICE agent shoots and wounds man in Austin, Texas, officials say

A federal immigration officer in Austin, Texas, shot and injured a man on Sunday, according to authorities. The incident took place in the city's north side, in the early afternoon. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent rammed the suspect's vehicle and then fired at least five shots, said Mike Siegel, a representative for Austin's District 7.

The man was transported to a hospital, but his condition is unknown. Police and the mayor later released details of the incident at a news conference. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has yet to provide further information regarding the matter. A dark blue Toyota Corolla, parked under an overpass with damage to its passenger-side door and bullet holes, was reported by local media.

At least two bullet holes were visible to Siegel. U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, representing parts of Austin, called for transparency in the investigation, demanding a full, independent inquiry, immediate release of body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who may have violated the law. The recent shootings of ICE officers in July, including the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Johan Sebastián in Maine, have raised concerns about the administration's push for mass deportations.

Despite the administration no longer focusing on individual cities, arrests continue to occur. The administration's enforcement efforts have been widely criticized following the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota last winter.
