Horror movie ‘Resident Evil’ tops N. American box office

Horror movie "Resident Evil," a video game adaptation, dominated the North American box office with a $60 million opening weekend, according to industry estimates. Directed by Zach Cregger and starring US actor Austin Abrams, the film follows a medical courier battling mutant creatures to deliver a package to a remote hospital. Last week's top performer, Warner Bros' "Practical Magic 2," starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, dropped to second place with a $12.2 million weekend take.

Spider-Man continued its streak at the top, earning $6.5 million, bringing its total US and Canada gross to $944.5 million. "The Odyssey" rounded out the top five with $4.9 million. "Coyote vs Acme" held fifth place with $4.5 million, while "The Runner," "Daniel and the Fiery Furnace," "Transformers: The Movie," "The Weight," and "Buddy" rounded out the top 10.
