Givance returns fumble 24 yards for TD, North Dakota State beats Sacramento State 31-10

Midwestern State University's football team shattered its own single-game scoring record in their Lone Star Conference opener on Saturday, amassing a staggering 708 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns in a lopsided 84-17 triumph over Western New Mexico. The Mustangs eclipsed their previous mark of 82 points, set against the same opponent in 2001. Kicker Kohen Maroney added to the record-breaking spree by successfully converting all 12 of his extra-point attempts.

The offensive explosion came after Midwestern State had taken the week off with a 1-1 record, following a 30-23 victory over Missouri Southern and a 48-27 loss to Michigan Tech. Quarterback Kaden Brown proved to be the driving force behind the team's offensive onslaught, finishing with 15 completions on 19 passes for 255 yards and three touchdown scores, along with a rushing touchdown. Dalton Bailey chipped in with four receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Midwestern State took an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter, fueled by two touchdown runs by Joseph Dodds and Brown's own 2-yard scoring run. Brown extended the Mustangs' halftime lead to 42-3 with three touchdown passes in the second quarter. Sean Jastrab contributed 169 passing yards and two more touchdowns, helping the Mustangs amass a total of 446 passing yards and 262 rushing yards. Ryan Swirczynski sealed the record-breaking affair with a 10-yard touchdown run with just 2:19 remaining on the clock.

The Mustangs' defensive efforts were equally impressive, as they intercepted three passes and scored 21 points off turnovers. They managed to hold Western New Mexico, who finished the game with just 17 points, to a meager 17-point tally despite holding them to just 17 points. Midwestern State now stands at 2-1 (1-0 LSC) after their dominant performance, and they will face off against West Texas A&M on Saturday, September 26, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
