Germany's Merz vows to press on with reforms despite state election defeat

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz faced a significant electoral setback in two state elections on Sunday, including a historic loss for his party, but remained steadfast in his commitment to implementing much-needed reforms. Exit polls by public broadcaster ARD suggested that Merz's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) secured only 5% of the vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, marking the party's lowest electoral result since World War II.

The anti-migration, Russia-friendly Alternative for Germany (AfD) party made substantial gains in the elections. Despite the disappointing results, Merz staunchly defended his government's reform agenda, describing it as a "disaster" for his party but vowing to press on. He emphasized that Germany's economic and political challenges called for difficult and potentially unpopular reforms, and expressed his determination to lead by example.

Merz's authority was further undermined by the CDU's loss to the AfD in the September 6 election in Saxony-Anhalt, a small eastern state. This result raised concerns among Germans who had hoped for a resurgence following the horrors of their country's Nazi past. At 70 years old, Merz assumed leadership of Germany 16 months ago with hopes of revitalizing a stagnant economy.

However, his efforts have thus far failed to improve the nation's mood and have led to increased unpopularity. Calls for Merz's replacement as chancellor have emerged from within his party, although no prominent figures have publicly advocated for his removal. Anticipating a challenging period following the elections, Merz canceled a planned trip to New York for the UN General Assembly.

Despite the difficulties, he has remained resolute in his commitment to completing his term as chancellor.
