GB police foil terrorist attack on checkpost between Diamer, Ghizer districts

On Saturday, Gilgit-Baltistan police thwarted a terrorist assault on a checkpost situated between the Diamer and Ghizer districts, according to a spokesperson for the regional police force. The attack, which occurred at the Sargah Nallah seasonal checkpost near the Singal police station, involved a group of around nine assailants who opened fire on a police patrol.

Despite the attackers' efforts to evade capture due to the challenging mountainous terrain and their elevated position, the police managed to retaliate effectively, ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in the incident.

Following the attack, the police force is taking necessary measures to relocate the patrol to a more secure and strategically advantageous location, as well as provide additional personnel, logistics, and equipment. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation at the district level, and the GB police have pledged their commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting innocent lives and property, and combating terrorism.

They have also requested the public to promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to the police and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies.

In April, the GB police apprehended 15 suspects during a counter-terrorism operation amid concerns over a series of attacks carried out by terrorists. Moreover, during the same month, the caretaker cabinet of Gilgit-Baltistan approved the renaming of the Counter-Terrorism Department as the Counter-Terrorism Unit and authorized the recruitment of 600 new officers to bolster law enforcement services in the region.
