Ed Sheeran says situation in Gaza is ‘catastrophic and unjustifiable’ as he opens solo concert

Ed Sheeran opened a solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday, addressing the controversial situation in Gaza during his performance. The controversy began when Macklemore, initially set to open the tour, was dropped due to his pro-Palestinian comments, following a September 5 show in New Jersey where he declared "Free Palestine."

Sheeran stated that the attacks in Israel of October 7, 2023, were horrific and that the events in Gaza were "catastrophic and unjustifiable." He expressed his desire for his music and shows to promote unity and humanity rather than politics. However, the decision to exclude Macklemore sparked a debate about freedom of speech and the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Other artists, including Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Billie Eilish's brother Finneas, also pulled out of the tour. When Sheeran took the stage at Lincoln Financial Field, a small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside. While some fans were disappointed that Sheeran did not take a stronger stance, others argued that a concert should be a place for music and enjoyment.

Macklemore has since donated $1 million to support Palestinian relief efforts, and Kraft has pledged to match the gift.
