Dr Noma Mbeki Foundation targets pens down drinking

The Dr Noma Mbeki Foundation launched its inaugural Anti-Pens Down event for Grade 12 learners in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, aiming to provide an alternative to traditional "pens down" celebrations often linked to underage drinking. Alcohol abuse remains a concern among learners in the region, with 47% of students reportedly having consumed alcohol, as per Liquor Board figures.

The foundation targeted Mdantsane, recognizing the high prevalence of alcohol-related incidents in lower-income communities, specifically in LSM levels one to three. Foundation President Dr Noma Mbeki emphasized their commitment to reaching underprivileged areas, stating that the initiative would expand to other disenfranchised regions throughout the country.

The event aimed to equip learners with tools to handle pressure from home and friends, rather than resorting to substance abuse or peer pressure. Social worker Akhona Nyosana stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of alcohol use, particularly the link to HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. The Dr Noma Mbeki Foundation intends to extend the programme to other townships in the Eastern Cape and eventually nationwide, coinciding with the annual matric "pens down" season.
