Domestic LPG cylinder booking: Biometric Aadhaar Authentication mandatory for subsidy from October 1

Starting October 1, biometric Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for domestic LPG consumers seeking subsidized refills in India. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas announced this change, emphasizing that those who have already completed the process need not take any further action. As of September 19, approximately 89.9% of the 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had already completed the authentication process.

Consumers who have not yet completed biometric Aadhaar authentication can do so via several methods. During LPG delivery, delivery personnel can complete the authentication using the OMC mobile application. Alternatively, consumers can visit their LPG distributor's showroom or complete the process through the respective oil marketing company's (OMC) mobile app, such as IndianOil ONE for Indane customers, HelloBPCL for Bharatgas customers, or HP PAY for HP Gas customers.

Consumers who cannot or choose not to complete Aadhaar biometric authentication can still receive LPG, but at market price without subsidy. They must register their choice through their OMC's digital channels, including the consumer web portal, mobile app, WhatsApp chatbot, or IVRS. Affected consumers will receive 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders at the applicable market price, subject to availability.

The Aadhaar authentication is being introduced to ensure that subsidized LPG reaches genuine consumers, identify duplicate or ineligible connections, and prevent the diversion of subsidized domestic LPG cylinders for commercial or industrial use. The government asserts that the process is not intended to deny LPG to genuine households and has provided multiple options for authentication completion.

Domestic LPG is currently sold below its cost, with an implicit subsidy of Rs 210 per 14.2 kg cylinder in September 2026, rising to Rs 721 per cylinder in June 2026. The government has compensated public sector oil marketing companies to maintain affordable domestic LPG prices. Consumers who have not yet completed biometric Aadhaar authentication are advised to complete the process before the October 1 deadline.
