Diphtheria: Benue heightens surveillance as cases rise across Nigeria

The Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services has intensified disease surveillance and emergency preparedness amid a rise in diphtheria cases across Nigeria. Dr Paul Ogwuche, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, informed journalists in Makurdi that while Benue had not recorded any confirmed cases, the nationwide increase in infections necessitated heightened vigilance.

Ogwuche pointed out the importance of the state's proximity to neighboring Nasarawa State, with frequent movement of people between the two states, making it crucial to strengthen measures to detect and contain any potential outbreak. Diphtheria, a serious and highly contagious bacterial disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, primarily affects the nose and throat. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, with crowded settings increasing the risk of spread.

The Ministry activated its epidemiological and public health emergency unit to ensure a prompt response to any suspected or confirmed cases. Immunization activities have been reinforced across the state's 23 local government areas as part of efforts to prevent both the introduction and spread of diphtheria. Areas with low vaccination coverage are particularly vulnerable, making routine immunization a crucial preventive measure.

Ogwuche urged parents and caregivers to ensure children receive all recommended vaccines and to seek medical attention promptly if their children develop symptoms such as fever or difficulty swallowing. The Ministry assured residents that they would continue monitoring developments within and outside the state, taking appropriate steps to safeguard the population from a potential outbreak.
