Denmark hails 'binding' Greenland deal with Trump

Denmark and Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, both welcomed a binding deal announced by US President Donald Trump. The agreement grants Washington permanent control over Greenland's security and prohibits Russian and Chinese bases in the Arctic territory. Both nations expressed their intent to sign the deal at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that the agreement respects Denmark's red lines and is crucial due to the evolving security landscape. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the agreement recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the deal acknowledges Greenland's interests and strengthens its security.

French President Emmanuel Macron also commented, asserting that the deal reaffirms Danish sovereignty over the Arctic territory. Greenland's residents displayed a mix of emotions, with some expressing unease about the increased US presence. The US has reportedly planned to build up a large military presence in the territory, with three new military bases potentially being opened in southern Greenland.

While Trump presented the deal as a significant victory, Danish commentators noted that the US already had the ability to increase its military presence in Greenland under an existing defense pact.
