Dalits need adequate representation in politics and administration, says Parameshwara

G. Parameshwara, the Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister, emphasized during a recent speech in Davangere that Dalit communities require substantial political and administrative representation, along with improved opportunities in education and employment for their overall development.

Parameshwara lamented that senior Dalit leaders like Basavalingappa, K.H. Ranganath, and Mallikarjun Kharge did not receive the recognition they deserved. He questioned why these individuals were never appointed as Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister, despite their capabilities and achievements. Since 1952, the state has held numerous elections, with many leaders occupying high-ranking positions, including Chief Minister.

However, it took until 2018 for Parameshwara to assume the role of Deputy Chief Minister, highlighting the delayed advancement of his community in politics.

Addressing the Merit Felicitation Programme organized by the Davanagere District Chalavadi Mahasabha at the S.S. Mallikarjun Cultural Hall, Parameshwara reflected on the extended period it took for someone from his community to reach such a high political office. He stressed the necessity for oppressed communities to be granted equal opportunities within the state's political and administrative frameworks to foster comprehensive development.

Parameshwara, now serving as Deputy Chief Minister, attributed his position to the Congress party's trust, acknowledging that the reasons for his appointment were multifaceted. However, he was clear that his role is to advocate for the marginalized and discriminated sections of society. He vowed to work towards rectifying past injustices and ensuring that the oppressed communities are no longer sidelined.
