Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman exited Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds after being hit in the face by a foul ball while in the on-deck circle. During the fourth inning, Reds pitcher Luis Mey threw a pitch that struck Bregman, who immediately headed towards the Cubs' dugout with his hand covering his left eye. A trainer escorted Bregman down the dugout steps and into the clubhouse, with visible blood on his face.

Matt Shaw pinch-hit for Bregman, who had a .260 batting average, 26 home runs, and 88 RBIs in 152 games. Signed to a $175 million, five-year contract in January, the Cubs are close to clinching a postseason berth, contingent upon a win Sunday and a Diamondbacks' loss.
