China’s CXMT touts new chip manufacturing platform as close to ‘world’s most advanced’

Chinese semiconductor company Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) unveiled its latest generation chip manufacturing platform, labeled G5, at a recent convention in its home region of Hefei. CXMT claimed that G5 represents a significant improvement over existing technologies, enabling the company to produce chips at a level approaching what the wire described as the "world's most advanced mass production memory platforms".

The G5 platform achieved a "quantum leap" in storage density, with the number of dies per wafer increasing by at least 50% compared to the previous generation. Meanwhile, CXMT maintained better energy efficiency and cost control, according to the company's statement. This advance brings CXMT's production capabilities to within 11.95 nanometres (nm) of the dominant 10nm process technology employed by industry leaders such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and US firm Micron Technology.

In addition to showcasing the G5 platform, CXMT also introduced two mass-produced LPDDR5X memory chips based on the new technology. These mobile-friendly dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips, with capacities of 24 gigabits each, represent a 50% increase in capacity over the preceding generation of similar products. The company highlighted that the LPDDR5X chips meet the requirements of "mid-to-high-end smartphones and portable consumer electronics".

CXMT's announcement, delivered at the World Manufacturing Convention, comes as the firm gains market traction with domestic smartphone manufacturers. Several high-end CXMT chips have already been integrated into flagship Chinese devices like the NaviX Ultra, which went on sale featuring AI assistant software from ByteDance. Other customers, including Xiaomi and budget phone producer Transsion, are also leveraging CXMT's LPDDR5X line for their products.
