China’s 13-year-old Yu cruises as Asian Games swimming begins

As the Asian Games swimming competitions commenced on the opening day in Tokyo, China's teenage sensation Yu Zidi and Olympic champion Pan Zhanle demonstrated their prowess by swiftly navigating through their respective heats. Yu, hailed as the youngest swimming world championships medallist in history last year at the tender age of 12, solidified her reputation this year by defeating American Olympic champion Regan Smith in March.

She set a remarkable pace in her women's 200m butterfly heat, finishing the race in an impressive 2 minutes and 7.97 seconds, a full 2.7 seconds ahead of the second-fastest qualifier from China, Chang Mohan.

Yu, who will turn 14 in October, had not yet celebrated her birthday when she clinched the bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay team last year. Pan Zhanle, competing in the men's 100m freestyle event where he secured a gold and set a world record at the Paris Olympics, expressed his intention to improve in Sunday's final, stating, "The first 50 I felt I controlled my speed and then the second 50 I was at the max."

The 22-year-old acknowledged that he was striving to adjust to the significant changes in his training and life following his outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics last year.

Meanwhile, Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita claimed the fastest time in the men's 200m individual medley with a time of 1 minute and 58.56 seconds, setting his country on a path for improved results in swimming at the Asian Games held in Japan. Despite the absence of pressure, Matsushita expressed his desire to deliver his best performance for the Japanese spectators.
