Chasing Sifuna's shadow? What is Caleb Amisi’s endgame?

Caleb Amisi, an MP for Saboti and leader of the People’s Renaissance Movement (PRM), has stated that his party could win at least 250 seats in the upcoming general election. Speaking to a local coastal radio station on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Amisi attributed this projection to perceived fissures within the opposition. He pointed out that if these divisions persist, they could enable President William Ruto to secure another term.

"And why we want at least 250 MPs is because of this game the opposition is playing—splitting the votes. Then Ruto comes back. We will have 250 MPs. If you bring Ruto back in the first week, we will have a motion of impeachment. We only need 233 signatures," Amisi declared. If Ruto were to retain power, Amisi's party would leverage its parliamentary strength to initiate an impeachment motion against the president, as Kenyans would have failed to remove him via the ballot.

Looking ahead, Amisi stated that the PRM would push for constitutional reforms to enhance party discipline and tackle the issue of elected leaders defecting to government-aligned parties shortly after elections. He proposed that an elected leader who switches parties should resign from their role, contest in a by-election, and allow voters to determine whether they deserve another term in their new political party.

This move, Amisi argued, would reinforce party loyalty and maintain leaders' accountability to voters and the parties that elected them.
