Bengal govt to sign agreement with Centre on Sep 28 to set up airport in Purulia: CM

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Sunday that the West Bengal government will sign an agreement with the Centre on September 28 to establish an airport in Purulia district under the Centre's UDAN scheme. The UDAN initiative aims to enhance air connectivity to underserved regions and bolster last-mile aviation services.

During a meeting at the Circuit House, Adhikari confirmed that airport preparations are finalized and the state has submitted an application for the necessary license. He emphasized that improved air connectivity will be a key component of an overarching development strategy for Purulia, which includes expanding tourism, infrastructure, and industrial activity.

The state government anticipates a significant investment of approximately ₹1 lakh crore in the district within the next year, with sectors like defense, steel, cement, and solar industries showing interest. Adhikari stated that within a year, the total investment would reach ₹1 lakh crore, including a ₹5,000 crore project in Raghunathpur that has already received a 'bhoomipujan.'

The government plans to ensure that every household benefits from welfare schemes and job creation, revamping facilities at the mini zoo, enhancing forest department guest houses, and boosting religious and forest tourism. Adhikari also highlighted the political influence of the BJP in Purulia, noting that the area has consistently voted for the party since 2018 and is a key contributor to the BJP's rise in Bengal.
