Australian PM seeks big tech backing for internet safety, AI rules

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Sunday that his government would seek the backing of major technology companies to strengthen child online safety laws and introduce stricter AI regulation. Albanese met with former Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple's headquarters in California on Saturday, where he highlighted the need for a collaborative effort to safeguard children from internet dangers.

Albanese noted that Australia cannot tackle this challenge alone and emphasized that they are implementing stronger rules to protect Australians online. Cook confirmed during a subsequent post on social media that Apple is committed to introducing robust and user-friendly controls to ensure children's safety online.

Australia's recent legislation banning users under 16 from accessing social media platforms marked the country's pioneering efforts to shield children from online bullying and manipulative algorithms. Recently unveiled draft laws aim to impose a 'duty of care' on firms operating popular platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.

These regulations would also grant users the option to disable algorithms if they choose to do so. Despite the ban on under-16s, data revealed that social media app usage among Australian minors aged 16 and below continues to rise.

Albanese, currently on a US visit to prepare for the upcoming UN General Assembly, has also advocated for enhanced AI regulation. Following warnings about AI safety from industry leaders, the Australian PM expressed concern over the potential for AI systems to operate beyond human control. Speaking to national broadcaster ABC, Albanese highlighted the importance of ensuring that humans retain authority over AI-generated content.

He questioned how society can maintain human oversight while technological systems increasingly shape our lives.
