Andros Townsend run over by pitch roller in Thai League

Former England international Andros Townsend, 35, was involved in an alarming accident during a Thai League 1 match on September 19. While warming up at halftime in Pattani FC's 3-0 loss to PT Prachuap FC, Townsend followed the ball towards an area where a pitch roller was in operation. The roller passed over him around the waist and upper thigh area, causing him to fall.

Despite the frightening incident, Townsend, who was part of the substitute lineup for Prachuap, did not sustain serious injuries and returned to the game in extra time. The incident has drawn attention from British media and raised questions about the safety of operating pitch-maintenance machinery in areas used by players for warm-ups.

The Football Association of Thailand has responded, emphasizing the need for competition organizers, match commissioners, referees, and all clubs to strictly adhere to safety regulations and standards, particularly concerning player, official, and staff safety. The association will investigate the circumstances surrounding the Townsend incident and review relevant procedures and safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
